The Captured Modular Nosecone Bay Kit is a complete set of SMT Designs parts that can be assembled into a fully functional module for the supported devices and batteries listed (customer supplies device and battery).

The bay is designed for smaller rockets such as 38mm and Mach1 BT60 tubing.  The common module consists of a base with an arming switch, mounting hardware, and a platform bracket. The case can be end mounted in a bulkhead or used with optional adapters that fit 38mm, 54, 65, 75, and 98mm nosecones. Note: for use in 54mm and above, it is strongly recommended to enclose the bay in a section of 1/16 inch walled 38mm coupler tube for added lateral strength. The 54 to 98mm adapters include mounting for the coupler tube.

The captured bay supports smaller devices such as the MissileWorks T3, EggTimer EggFinder Mini, and the FeatherWeight GPS. Of note, the Standalone Modular Nosecone Bay Kits will support these devices as well as larger devices such as the MissileWorks RTx  and the EggTimer EggFinder.

Mounting to the nosecone shoulder is accomplished by three 4-40 threaded inserts at 120 spacing around the perimeter of the base module (the 98mm bay uses 8-32 hardware for added strength). A end accessible arming screw is used to power the tracker on and off.

Mach1 BT60 Sizing Guide

  • Rockets that use the Estes nosecone will need a BT60 to 38mm Nosecone Bay Adapter to adapt a Normal Wall 38mm bay to their rocket
  • Rockets that use the heavy wall LOC nosecone will require a Ultra Thick 38mm bay adapter and the LOC nosecone will need to be bored out to fit the bay (only supports MissileWorks T3 and 1S 750mAh LiPo due to size constraints)
  • Rockets that use the fiberglass metal tipped nosecone will require a Mach1 BT60 bay adapter.

Notes:

  • Modifications necessary to use the 38mm LOC heavy nosecone and this bay (38mm ultra thick wall)
    • Cut shock cord loop end of shoulder off as close as possible to the end to keep shoulder length as long as possible
    • Bore out shoulder diameter to 33.5mm / 1.32 inches (this reduces the shoulder wall thickness to 2.5mm / 0.1 inches
  • The ultra thick wall nosecone does not support all devices and batteries. Currently, the T3 and Turnigy 1S 750 mAh combination is supported. Contact SMT Designs for additional support.
  • BT80 Estes nosecone support requires cutting off a small amount of the nosecone shoulder at the end.
